14 Jun Is Knowledge Killing Your Ability To Make Money?
In this post, we are going to talk about why you likely don’t need more KNOWLEDGE. More importantly is knowledge killing your ability to make money? This is for you if you feel like you are stuck in “student” mode in your business and are struggling to take action. OR if you think you are “doing the things” but are still not getting the results you want.
Both of my parents were professors and growing up they were both actually still finishing up graduate degrees. I remember my mom having her straight A report card on the fridge next to mine (I was a solid A-B student) which made me feel completely shitty (and something I have worked through for years). I was always told you need to keep going to school. You need to keep studying.
I faithfully went along this path. In high school, I was excited and ready to go to college.
At this point, I learned a hugely valuable lesson as I went off into the “real world” of bedside nursing. I got a job at the Neuro ICU and realized I KNEW NOTHING!
My first day on the job the neurosurgeon attending looked at me and said “What do you think? can he come off the vent”? I was like WTF? ME? It’s my first day I don’t know.
But that was the level of trust that the doctors held for us because we were with the patients all day long, we had residents where I worked so many of the nurses would actually teach the residents and these people’s lives were in our hands so I knew I better smarten up.
None of the knowledge that I learned there over the next 6 years was “Textbook” knowledge. Yes, I had read about it in textbooks but every single case was so different just because humans are complex individuals with multiple comorbidities and unique situations.
So it was only through experience that I caught on.
This job was extremely physically demanding. As you can imagine lifting heavy patients that were intubated and comatose. SO I decided to go back to graduate school to continue to “advance my career”.
Then Graduate school and just a few credits from graduating graduate school I was like “I F*** HATE THIS” that’s when I “took a break”. Everyone told me don’t do…if don’t take a break you will never return. But I knew in my heart that it was the right move for me. I focused on working ( and moved up the corporate ladder) and I was still extremely unfulfilled. It was not until I had my son that I realized I was just doing “What everyone said”.
Continuing to climb the corporate ladder and get more education was making me feel increasingly worse & robbing me of my freedom to spend time with my son. So I started this side business as a health coach that is where I felt lit up excited to get up out of bed every day and work on my business.
I started on a very similar pattern- AKA I was really stubborn. I proceeded to learn everything I possibly could about social media, online marketing, copywriting, sales. I saw the same pattern of hoarding information arise.
And here is another pattern I noticed. When we go into this information consumption phase. We think that “information” is the answer. we are so adamant about getting the right information that we fail to do the THING that will progress us forward….ACTION.
See when you are taking in information. You are analyzing. Strategizing. Possibly even getting ready to get ready
BUT you have not actually done it failed and gotten back up.
In failing and getting back up the true lessons are learned.
That is where you see those glimmers of CLARITY, the confidence comes through and you start to really feel like you know your stuff.
WHEN you realize that the failing and getting back up is the way you learn you can release the feeling of “needing to know everything” before you go DO the thing.
Failure is no longer scary because you know that it’s the path towards your goal.
You are actually excited to “see what might work!” rather than putting pressure on yourself to do everything “perfectly by the book”.
I had a similar experience happen with one of my clients. She had been stuck in learning mode purchasing every course she could about online marketing. She had studied and studied her audience and really dove into the market research.
For 2 years she was stuck in analysis paralysis and on our first call, I helped her to see the pattern of “learning mode” and showed her a way out. That first week she got her first client in two years because she went from “thinking about things”, trying to be perfect and putting too much pressure on herself to doing the thing and being okay with the imperfect outcomes.
So in summary, when you are stuck in learning mode it does not allow room for a critical component to actually achieving the results you want and that only comes by APPLYING THAT KNOWLEDGE. That is when you can master the information through ACTION.
