06 Jan Why Every Mom Needs to Start an Online Business
One year ago this month, I jumped into health coaching as an online business venture. In this article, I describe how it saved my booty this year and why I would do it again in a heart beat.
I am an RN and I also have a degree in psychology, the funny thing is, having the knowledge of health, fitness and the consequences of being overweight did not prevent me from being overweight. The knowledge was not what helped me to lose the weight because I had the knowledge all along as I gained the weight. After struggling for many years with my weight, I went on to lose 80 pounds over the course of almost a year by changing my mindset and taking action on what I knew. Which of course is that, diet and exercise are the key to weight loss. But there are many factors that I was missing every other time I tried to lose weight. Again and again without getting results. Mindset, Support and action were the keys that I was missing.
After losing the weight, I became obsessed with helping others to reach their goals by helping them with their mindset, providing support and accountability and helping them to take action. As a health coach, I helped dozens of people lose weight and to date my most dedicated client has lost 50 pounds.
I became pregnant with my daughter shortly after starting my online business and I continued to do health coaching part-time while working full-time as a Registered Nurse. I built my business while pregnant, working full time and having a baby. I could have given up when I started. I could have said “oh hell with this its too hard”, “I dont need the money” (when I started I was working as an RN Case Manager full-time). But for me, it was not about the money. I did it because I was passionate about helping people to get healthy and to bridge that gap that fitness programs and diets do not provide: support, mindset and action. But something inside of me was driven to make it my business thrive. I wanted to make an impact in the world, even if I helped only one person. So I continued and little did I know that I would end up relying on the income from my business.
The moment my life changed forever
My daughter was born premature at only 28 weeks (babies are supposed to be born between 37-40 weeks). She was in intensive care for over two months and I was unable to work. Given her condition, to this day she requires special attention and I remain unable to go to work outside of the home. Which makes me beyond grateful that I started my online business to support myself and my family when I am unable to work.
People think that having an online business is not a secure form of income. People say that it is a risk to start a business. I believe that it is a risk to not have a back up plan. It is a risk to rely on someone else for employment and not take action towards creating your own income for yourself. It is a risk to believe that you have a “secure” income when you never know the circumstances that may come up that could prevent you or your spouce from being able to work. I have friends who have used the income from their online businesses to support their families after their husband was layed off, after they lost their jobs or when unexpected bills came in. I have expanded my services from health and fitness coaching to also help moms who want to start online businesses. I help moms to balance work and home and manage their time more efficiently so that they can do the things the need to to grow their business.
I decided to help women who want to work from home because there is no greater injustice than a woman who is unable to work, if she wants to provide the income that is needed to support their family after having kids.
I don’t think a woman has to choose between having a career that provides for her family and spending time with their kids. Why can’t we do both?
