3 Things To Consider Before Starting A New Platform

In this episode, I share the 3 things to consider before starting a new platform. I walk you through some examples and ideas for you to be able to make the best decision for your business. This is helpful if you are looking to start a new podcast, blog or social network.

Someone in The Impact Driven Entrepreneur Facebook Group requested that I answer a question for her essentially asking if its a good idea to start a podcast.

This is such a complex answer for me to give. And I feel like the questions that I would ask are the same as you decide on starting a new platform. Ultimately the answers will come up as we explore what is really going in your business.

In this episode, I wanted to walk you through some of the things I would consider in my client’s businesses when they are considering making a decision like this.

As always, I give more detail and examples in the audio, if you scroll below you will find a recap of the questions and prompts that I mentioned in the audio so you can take the time to journal and explore these things in more detail.


#1: Why do you want to start this new platform?

It’s important for you to know what you envision will happen with the addition of this platform and we can assess that here. Some questions to ask yourself:

  • What do you believe the platform will give you that you don’t currently have
  • What is it about this specific platform that you are excited about?
  • Is your ideal client really on this platform?
  • What is the current conversation like on this platform and does it lend to the message/market that I am going after?


If you are answering these questions from a place of scarcity or lack: Not enough clients, not enough leads, not enough followers and you are already creating content on other platforms evaluate what you are doing and focus your energy on improving what you are already creating. It is much easier to move people along the customer journey or sales process from an existing platform than it is to start fresh from the beginning with zero momentum.

Make sure you are solving the right problem by starting this new platform.

With regard to you message make sure you have fully flushed out the message you are communicating to your audience, I talk about how to do this more effectively on last week’s episode about copywriting. 


#2: Assess the bandwidth your business has.

We are business owners who cannot do it all. I know we think we can but we really can’t and usually in a small business, the business owner is wearing multiple hats: Servicing clients, marketing, financial management, advertising, and customer service. When we are spread too thin we cannot do all of these things at a high level of effectiveness.

Your success on this platform boils down to your ability to be strategic, show up consistently and serve your audience. You must have the bandwidth to be able to do all of these by not being spread too thin.

Some questions you can ask yourself are:

  • Do I have the time, energy, money, and staff to start this platform?
  • What resources will I need to get this platform started?
  • How long will it take me to get those resources?
  • What is my plan for getting those resources?
  • Given that when could I launch this new platform?


With regard to bandwidth it’s not something where you simply say well, I just don’t have the money, poor me. You simply create the plan to get the resources you need and go after it if its something you really want to do.

#3: Alignment with your vision

Being in business is a long-term game. Where is your company going to be in 5-10 years and does this platform fit into that vision?

Only you know the answer to these questions and as a coach, it is my job to guide you and help you to figure out the best decision for you.

In summary, you will want to consider why you want to start this platform, what resources you have to or will nee dot get in order to get the results you want and lastly, how this platform aligns with your overall vision for your business.
