10 Best Books for Momtrepreneurs 2016

The best part about being a momtrepreneur, for me, is the getting to read great books. From the very beginning that has been the thing that has captivated me the most about starting my own business. I wanted to learn everything and submerged myself in educational material over the last year. I wanted to put together a list of my favorite books that I read over the past year that has really helped me in my business.

1)The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph

This book is amazing and inspiring. As you know, my daughter was born a preemie last year. In the midst of all of the turmoil with her in the hospital, I had a huge revelation, I was meant to go through everything that I have gone through because it is my purpose to help moms who want to spend more time with their kids. You see, I had started a health coaching business in January of 2015 and it was that income helped me to support my family during the time when I was unable to work.

This book helped me to get over any of the excuses that were coming up for me like “It’s not a good time to start a business” or “It’s too late to start an online business now”. The book actually gives examples from times in history where people persevered through different obstacles and how many of the most profitable businesses in the world were actually started during times of turmoil. I loved that each chapter is pretty short so that you can read one or two chapters per day in only a few minutes and have the inspiration you need for the day ahead.

2) The Magic of Thinking Big

This book opened my eyes to how critical mindset is in life. I realized all of the ways that I was playing small by thinking small. This book is also a quick short read with a lot of great examples. I loved the chapter that talks about confidence. Confidence is something that I personally struggled with a lot especially in the beginning of my business.

3) Unlimited: A Three-Step Plan for Achieving Your Dreams

Jillian Michaels is known as the hard-ass trainer on the biggest loser. In this book, she does not actually talk about personal training at all. This book is all about how to set goals, accomplish them and live a better life overall. I loved how she actually brings in science and research into goal setting and visualization and the actual work that goes into living your dream life. Its a different spin on the very “woo-woo” concepts that we hear about so much with mindset work. Coming from a science background anything that is backed up by literature is right up my alley.

4) The Compound Effect

This book is great because it forced me to look at the seemingly insignificant tasks and things I did every day and see how that would effect my life over time. I loved this book because it is extremely actionable and you can really start to see where the everyday activities fit into your the big picture of your goals. The way the author breaks down tasks it is just as easy to do the task than it is not to do it. So he makes implementing the changes very easy and actionable.

5) Fearless & Fabulous: 10 Powerful Strategies for Getting Anything You Want in Life

Don’t let the pink cover fool you, this book is mighty powerful. I loved every sentence in this book. It is more like a workbook which is great because there are lots of questions and prompts for journaling and reflecting on your life. It is not a book you just sit there are read. She gives you questions to work through and helps you to come to the best conclusion for your situation and life. Its like having your own personal life coach.

6) Fascinate: Your 7 Triggers to Persuasion and Captivation

I first heard about this book through a podcast and Sally Hogshead really fascinated me (pun intended). The woman has done tons of research in the process of writing this book and she has an extensive assessment that you can take when you purchase the book so you can understand your own fascination triggers. This book is all about attracting your ideal customer to you in a way that magnifies your strengths and how people already perceive you. It is perfect for mom entrepreneurs because the main way to attract customers is by being uniquely you and honing in on your strengths.

7) Get Rich, Lucky Bitch!: Release Your Money Blocks and Live a First Class Life

I loved this book so much that I am now taking her lucky bitch money boot camp. Her strategies for uncovering your money mindset issues really work. I was seriously on a webinar with her and she said during this webinar you will get 3 signs from the universe that ask you to compromise something. And sure enough within 2 hours of that webinar I had gotten 3 random phone calls from people offering me different job offers. It sounds a little crazy but its true. Trust me if you struggle with making the type of money that you are desiring to make in your life and business read this book.

8) The School of Greatness: A Real-World Guide to Living Bigger, Loving Deeper, and Leaving a Legacy

If you are an entrepreneur this podcast and book are a must! In this book Lewis Howes summarizes all of the tools that he learned through his life as well as through interviews with some of the most successful people in the world. The book is a wealth of knowledge and expertise that have taken the worlds most successful people years to learn.

9) Will It Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don’t Waste Your Time and Money

This book is critical for entrepreneurs who have a great idea and are not sure if it will work out. You may be wondering how I can recommend this book when it was only released yesterday. I was fortunate enough to be in Pat Flynn’s book launch test group and have had the opportunity to read the book and review it prior to the release. I have loved every minute of the process of working with Pat Flynn through this. I will recommend this book to every single one of my clients as a part of working with me because it is so critical in the process of creating a business that works.

10) The Psychology of Selling: Increase Your Sales Faster and Easier Than You Ever Thought Possible

As entrepreneurs, we have to sell. Its a reality that I closed my ears and said “lalalala” to for a long time. I dreaded being too salesy and my biggest fear was actually talking to people…which hello! How can you help anyone if you don’t talk to them? This book really helped me with my confidence in the sales department. I also found it helpful to reframe my fear of being salesy to this…a sale is a way to help someone. By avoiding bringing up the solution (your sale) you are literally withholding help and a solution to their problem.

I hope you enjoyed this roundup of my favorite books I have read over the past year. I would love to hear from you! What book would you add to the list? Comment below or link to an article on your blog.
